Soapbox Science inspires podcast

The powerful life storytelling of deaf people is the topic of an innovative BSL podcast by Dr Goedele De Clerck of the Social Research with Deaf People group (SORD), who presents her research into the strength that these individuals and their communities find in sharing their stories.

The podcast promotes her upcoming presentation for Soapbox Science in Oxford on 18th June 2016, where she will become its first-ever British Sign Language (BSL) presenter.

Soapbox Science promotes the visibility of women scientists and their research through public outreach, and is inspired by Speaker’s Corner in London’s Hyde Park. Dr De Clerck, who is a Marie Curie Fellow in the Horizon 2020 programme, commented: “It means a lot to me that this helps deaf children and young people, especially girls, to grow up knowing that research is being done in and on BSL, with deaf people, and by deaf scholars including women.”

Aiming to be accessible for all, the podcast features video, pictures, subtitles and audio, and was made possible through the generous support of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work. It is entitled How do deaf life stories make a change for all of us?
